Spring 2023, Whitman College

About the Project

On May 8, 2023, students in my Art and Public Engagement (ARTS-103) course presented Speculative Futures EcoPutt, a temporary, co-authored interactive public artwork in the form of a minigolf course. This participatory sculptural installation speculated on the climate future of Eastern Washington by envisioning both optimistic and alarming outcomes, and has been primarily constructed using reused materials. The player with the lowest score will won a handmade trophy.
The course featured the following attractions:
  1. A geologic timeline by Kai Bowen and Owen Wild
  2. A native plant habitat by Sabrina Suminski and Katie Chilton
  3. An diminished snowpack avalanche by Ellawynn Morrison and Will Weisz
  4. A Columbia river dam salmon run by Payton Davies and Livvie Bright
  5. Dimensional carbon footprint data by Jakota Grossman and Edgar Tarimo
  6. An invasive species obstacle by Cyri Nemecek and Harper Hanson
  7. A verdant speculation by Henry Hines, Katie Kirk and Tyler Bales
